I Wish I Knew These 10 Things Before Blogging

When I started my blog in 2025 it is an understatement when I tell you I was overwhelmed. Between the different layout options, niche options, having to figure out what to do with my blog post after I had posted it, etc. Listed below are the top 10 things I wish I had known before starting my blog.

1. Blogging Is a Long Game

I knew that my blog wasn’t going to automatically take off from the beginning but I think I underestimated truly how much work goes into managing a blog. Especially the marketing that came with it, don’t get me wrong I love what I am doing. Blogging isn’t something you can make one single product for and continuously make money off of that one post. It is truly an investment but a rewarding investment.

2. You Don’t Need to Be on Every Platform

When I first started my blog I searched on every platform I could possibly think of on how to be a blogger. I created an account on every social media platform possible, spent hours upon hours writing down my to-do lists for each platform, creating hundreds of graphics on Canva for each platform. I learned that it all starts with the blog post. It sounds so simple but it is something that I overthought. Once you have your post exactly how you want it, the captions for your Pinterest pin and description, Instagram captions and everything else you need to post, comes naturally.

3. Your First Posts Won’t Be Perfect (And That’s Okay)

I spent weeks trying to nail down what I wanted my first few blog posts to be. I wanted it to be perfect- Type A girly over here with OCD. Hi, yeah that’s me. I needed to be realistic with myself that obviously there were going to be bumps in the road, I would learn more with experience. But there was always that little voice in my head telling me “It needs to be perfect!”. Do the best with what you can and do not be hard on yourself. You can always rewrite posts.

4. Consistent Design Matters

When creating my graphics I didn’t necessarily stick to my branding kit. I found pretty designs on Canva and Pinterest and was like “OOOO I want to do this one.” Quickly, I became overwhelmed because nothing was matching, nothing was flowing together like I had wanted. So just a friendly reminder, your branding kit will seriously save you more times than we both care to admit.

5. SEO. Learn it. Love it. Breathe it.

I left learning more about SEO till the end of my to-do list because it honestly seemed daunting and like a continuous black hole filled with information. Long story short, this is the tool that will help your blog get more traffic through search engines such as Google. SEO includes keywords, hashtags, etc. Anything that can help attract more readers.

6. Email Marketing is More Valuable Than You Think

I saved hundreds of pins to a Pinterest board on blogging tips and several of them included email marketing and where to start. I didn’t think starting an email newsletter right off the bat would be important because I wanted to get my blog situated first to where I was happy with it.  Email marketing is a tool that helps your readers come back to your blog. Whether it’s a simple “New Blog Post” email or you use it to market products or courses your blog may offer. The sooner I realized this the easier and less daunting email marketing became. I personally use Klaviyo for all of my email marketing needs and LOVE IT!!

7. Stick to Your Budget

The best part about creating a blog or starting in email marketing is that there are several tools out there that offer free or lower price options. When I started my blog I invested in owning my domain name through Bluehost which only came to roughly $50.00 for an entire year. You can create the tool that is going to help you create the life you have dreamt of, for under $100 or less.

8. Be Clear With Your Niche

Readers are coming to your blog to get advice or products/services revolving around a topic/niche. Being clear about what your niche is from the beginning will help your readers understand your purpose and what your blog is there to help them accomplish.

9. Imposter Syndrome Is Normal and That’s Okay

Starting my blog I often questioned myself whether or not I had enough experience or if I even had enough to talk about. I even questioned whether or not I was good enough to be a blogger and enter the world of digital marketing. Everyone has a story and that story deserves to be heard.

10. The Possibilities Are Endless

Blogging started as a hobby that was used to pass the time. Since I have started my blog it has opened doors that led to opportunities that I never thought were possible.

If you have chosen to start the rewarding journey that Blogging truly is, congrats. I am always here if you need any advice!
